"Piccolo Project" in Burgas
.
An innovative music pedagogical project has been created in Burgas, Bulgaria. It is developed as a practical example of research work on evaluation of the changes in the music education of some countries from the former East European Block. The project ran at first in 2014 under the name of Summer Music Academy "Piccolo Orchestra" from June to August and over 15 children and two music pedagogues participated. The project ran also in the summer of 2015 and over 25 children had taken part in it. (Please refer to the end of the page for additional information.)
The main characteristics of the project are its accessibility for everyone who wishes to participate without any restrictions as well as its innovative method of education called the "classroom education". With this method, all the students take active part in the process of teaching - the more advanced the students, the more important their roles in helping the teachers. Another key future of the ”classroom method” is that the teacher is able to effectively transmit the teaching material to the students during the class. Individual arrangements are difficult to be made because of the great number of students who will participated in the project. Therefore; private lessons, although sometimes needed, will be infrequent and as a general rule exceptions. On one hand this method helps to reduce the cost for instrumental training which is always seen as costly from the state and generally not fostered; on the other hand most of the students who partook last year in the project wanted to learn music only as a hobby and in the orchestral setting they felt much more entertained. This helped their motivation and boosted their social skills. Through music practicing the students communicated with each other and for most of them, this experience was the first of its kind .
For many years before the “Piccolo Project”, there were no educational projects in which such student body could partake. This is a pity and at the same time unfortunate, as there are so many jobless music teachers in the city of Burgas who are forced to take non-music jobs because of the lack of positions in music education.
